THE BLOW MONKEYS
‘FEELS LIKE A NEW MORNING’
THE BLOW MONKEYS are to release FEELS LIKE A NEW MORNING, their third album of new material since re-convening in 2008, on Monday, May 6th 2013, on the Cherry Red label.
Few artists who have been doing what they’ve been doing as long as Robert Howard genuinely make the best music of their career; but, somewhat typically, both he and the Blow Monkeys on Feels Like A New Morning inhabit a refreshed, creative atmosphere, suffused with a desire to inspire that produces some frequently dazzling musical gear shifts, underpinning a set of sharply-crafted and mature songs that will not only thrill those who are already on the BM bus, but will also surprise those that thought they may have had the band neatly bagged and labelled.
Recorded and mixed at Bethesda Studios, North Wales, in a whirlwind eight days (as Howard says… “It shows in a good way - no needless tinkering”) Feels Like A New Morning navigates an assured path that balances thoughtful lyricism to just the right amount of studio polish and a winning combo feel.
One might presume, given the straightened times we live in, that a free-thinking songwriter like Robert Howard may reflect this in his songs by way of righteous anger; well, anger is there, but filtered through a more defiantly positive prism: “Well the songs are just a reflection of my mood. I was quite ill at times last year and it changed a few things in my life. I gave up alcohol and smoking completely and I guess it shows. It’s probably the first album where I haven't had a drink. I just had more energy, felt more positive. I just think it was time to make something uplifting. I didn’t want to get into ‘singer-songwriter’ territory with this or get too personal or maudlin. There are barely any acoustic guitars on this. That was my self imposed rule”!
The title track radiates an optimism that is not of the ‘hello sky, hello trees’ variety, but more of a mature nature, a sense of the hard-won that is a strand that runs through much of the content throughout the album. Cover Me is borne aloft on a melodica melody that puts you in mind of Augustus Pablo, relocated in a dreamy, bucolic Brit ballad that incorporates some of the Fenland mystery that informs Howard’s writing. Chained has mnemonic echoes of classic pop songcraft (“I nailed my Bacharach obsession on that one!” – Robert Howard) the lyric of which belies the title with a positive, upwards, onwards and outwards lyric that may be one of Howard’s finest-ever songs. Quality songcraft of a different complexion informs Said Too Much – back in the day, the Blow Monkeys were way ahead of the game by incorporating Dance music elements in their sound, and Said Too Much lashes an incisive lyric to a dance-friendly rhythm and a bluesy chord sequence to come up with something that is refreshingly vital and new. The woozy Jazz Waltz of In No Time At All recalls the kind of soundtrack to a ‘trip sequence’ from a 60’s Brit flick as Robert says: ”Everyone in the band shines and Nev in particular plays some lovely soprano sax” – it’s yet another inspired, deftly shaded song in a vivid, revitalised collection.
